Thailand visas and entry requirements

Choose the right permission, prepare your arrival and check the border before you travel.

Use this Thailand visas guide to match your passport, purpose and length of stay with the appropriate entry route. Start with short visits, then compare remote-work, retirement, employment, education, family and specialist categories. The border guides explain which crossings have published services, which are closed, and where current passenger access cannot be confirmed.

What changed in September 2026

From 15 September 2026, the general 60-day visa-exemption scheme was revoked. The replacement arrangements include a 30-day tourism exemption for 60 countries and territories, a 15-day exemption for two, and Visa on Arrival for three. Bilateral passport agreements are a separate part of the check. Travellers admitted before the change retain the date granted in their passport.

Choose a guide for your purpose

Tourism, working remotely for an overseas employer, employment in Thailand and retirement use different permissions. A visa’s validity is the window in which it may be used; the admission stamp determines how long you may remain. Holding a visa does not guarantee admission. Use the guide below before buying non-refundable travel.

Thailand visas: prepare the right evidence

Check the official Thai e-Visa tool using your passport nationality, current location and purpose. The responsible embassy’s checklist controls the evidence and fee. Typical application files include the passport biodata page, a recent photograph, proof of your location or residence, financial evidence and documents proving the purpose of the visit. Family, employer, university or specialist approval documents depend on the category.

A visa and an open border are separate checks

A visa does not reopen a suspended checkpoint. Thailand–Cambodia land crossings remain suspended in the official advice checked for this guide. Myanmar tourist e-Visa access is currently listed only at Kawthaung among land checkpoints; cargo or local border-pass operations do not establish tourist entry rights. Use the country pages for locations, maps, hours and source dates.
