Thailand retirement visas: O, O-A and O-X

Compare age, financial evidence, insurance and the difference between a visa and an extension.

Thailand retirement visas are not one interchangeable product. Non-Immigrant O, O-A and O-X have different application routes, document checks and insurance conditions. Start with your age, nationality, current residence and intended stay, then use the responsible embassy’s checklist and Thai Immigration’s extension requirements. A retirement-based permission does not provide an ordinary right to employment.

Non-Immigrant O for retirement

The retirement route normally begins from age 50. Check the mission’s evidence and the separate conditions for any annual retirement extension inside Thailand. Common financial routes involve THB800,000 in qualifying deposits or THB65,000 monthly income, with specific evidence and holding-period conditions. Initial visa and annual-extension rules must not be mixed; ask Immigration which deposit, income or combination route applies to your case.

Non-Immigrant O-A: long-stay retirement

O-A is intended for applicants aged 50 or over, generally applying in their country of nationality or permanent residence. Expect financial evidence, criminal-record clearance, a medical certificate and insurance documentation. Official guidance specifies medical cover of at least USD100,000 or THB3 million, including COVID-19 treatment, for the covered stay. Check the mission’s prescribed insurance certificate and accepted insurer arrangements before buying a policy.

Non-Immigrant O-X: eligible passports and funds

O-X is available from age 50 to qualifying passport holders of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States. The published financial routes are THB3 million in a Thai bank, or THB1.8 million plus annual income of THB1.2 million, subject to accumulation and ongoing balance rules. The route is five years plus a possible further five, not an unconditional ten-year stay.

O-X insurance and additional evidence

The Los Angeles O-X page updated on 1 October 2026 specifies a Thai insurer, at least THB40,000 outpatient and THB400,000 inpatient cover. Medical and criminal-record evidence and the prescribed forms are also required. Other official pages contain overlapping or older insurance wording. Obtain written confirmation from your responsible mission if its current checklist conflicts with another page; do not assume O-A and O-X insurance are identical.

Thailand retirement visas and ongoing administration

An annual extension, a 90-day address report and a re-entry permit are different processes. Reporting an address does not extend the permitted stay. Before travelling abroad on an extension, establish whether a re-entry permit is needed to preserve it. Check your actual admission stamp, insurance expiry, bank-evidence dates and reporting deadline rather than working from the visa’s headline validity.

Could another long-stay route fit better?

BOI’s Wealthy Pensioner LTR category is a separate, more selective route with income, investment and insurance conditions. Thailand Privilege is a paid membership programme with its own approval and visa conditions. Neither should be confused with an annual retirement extension. Compare the ongoing eligibility, work restrictions, document burden and total costs before choosing a route.

Put the documents and route together

Choose the permission for your real purpose, then check your arrival steps and any border crossing separately. Keep enough time for an extension decision or a confirmed departure before your permitted stay expires.
