Thailand transport guide

Find your way by rail, air, road, river and sea.

This Thailand transport guide brings the practical choices together: trains and sleepers, domestic flights, intercity coaches, ferries, city travel, car hire, motorcycle touring and cycling. Start with the journey you want to make, then open the detailed guide for maps, timetable sources, fare examples and direct operator links. All times are local Thailand time, UTC+7.
Information checked 21 October 2026. Timetable and fare examples are dated snapshots; use the official operator links for your actual travel date. Choose the right way to travel

For a long journey between major cities, compare a flight with an overnight train. A flight can save a day, but include airport transfers, baggage and check-in in the comparison. A sleeper can make the journey part of the trip; check the berth, carriage class and arrival date before paying.
Coaches and minivans fill gaps in the railway network and connect smaller towns. Ferries complete island journeys, sometimes within a through bus-and-boat ticket. A car suits a route with several rural stops. Cycling suits short local explorations, while mountain motorcycle touring calls for an experienced, correctly licensed rider.

Prices and timetables: read the basis first

Checked 21 October 2026. A quoted fare is an example for the stated route, class and date, not a national price list. Timetables describe planned departures; they are not live service guarantees. Follow the operator buttons for availability and the fare payable when you travel.
Useful published examples include the Red Line from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Rangsit at THB42 for an adult, and the RRC Suvarnabhumi–North Pattaya coach at THB135 per seat. The detailed guides explain the route and show the source. Airfares, rental quotes and island transfers often depend on the date, baggage, vehicle or package.

Map your departure point

Begin with the exact terminal rather than the city name. Bangkok has two main airports, several coach terminals and different railway departure stations. A bus ticket for Mo Chit 2 does not mean the BTS Mo Chit station. A ferry ticket may use a different pier from another operator serving the same island.
The map below locates Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. Each transport guide has its own useful location map or route links. Open maps before travelling, save your ticket and keep the destination address available offline. Maps are orientation tools; check actual boarding arrangements with the operator.

Build journeys that connect

Bangkok–Chiang Mai: compare a flight, a reserved train and a coach, then add the transfer to your accommodation. Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai: look at GreenBus or a road transfer. For Ko Samui, compare a direct flight to USM with a mainland airport and a separate bus-and-ferry connection.
For Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi and Ko Lanta, choose the coast and exact pier before buying an island connection. A late flight arrival may need an overnight mainland stop. If separate tickets are involved, allow room for disruption rather than planning around the shortest advertised connection.

Accessibility, children and luggage

Ask the actual operator about step-free boarding, assistance, accessible toilets and the size of any gap or gangway. A station lift does not establish that a particular train or boat is accessible. Ferry boarding may involve steps and movement between surfaces.
For children, compare age bands, seat or berth requirements and family baggage. For bicycles or bulky equipment, confirm carriage rules before buying a passenger ticket. Store luggage allowances and cancellation terms alongside the booking so the final journey cost is clear.
