Thailand work, study and family visas

Non-B, investment, ED, ED Plus and family-based O: choose the purpose before applying.

Thailand work study and family visas depend on the reason for your stay and the supporting Thai organisation or family member. Begin with the common application documents, then add the specific employer, education or relationship evidence. The Thai e-Visa system and responsible embassy determine the current checklist; Thai employment and extensions require separate attention after arrival.

Common application file

Prepare a passport or accepted travel document, a recent compliant photograph, proof of your current location or lawful residence and the mission’s financial evidence. Upload clear documents in the required language, with certification where requested. Use the exact passport details throughout. A sponsoring organisation should confirm which category and approval documents it will provide before you submit an application.

Employment and business: Non-Immigrant B

For a Thai job, prepare the employer’s invitation or employment letter, contract and the company or agency documents required by the mission, including Labour approval or work-permit documents where applicable. Business meetings use business-purpose evidence such as the Thai host’s invitation and the applicant employer’s letter. Having a Non-B visa does not by itself replace required work permission.

Investment: IB, IM and specialist EX

IB concerns investment-promotion activity under the relevant law; IM and EX appear in the central consular classification for approved investment and expert or skilled activity. These are purpose- and authority-led categories, not permission obtained simply by buying a home. Ask the sponsoring agency and responsible mission which approval, investment or professional evidence and category are required for the actual project.

Education: ED

Obtain an acceptance or enrolment letter and the school, university or training provider’s supporting approvals. The activity must match the course and category. A short recreational class and a degree programme need not use the same route. Keep attendance and enrolment evidence for any extension, and check the permitted stay actually granted rather than assuming the course’s advertised length is immigration permission.

ED Plus: degree study and the post-graduation option

The official ED Plus measure covers international students at bachelor’s degree level or above. It provides a re-entry-permit exemption during qualifying study and a possible one-year post-graduation stay to seek employment, travel or undertake other permitted activities. The institution supports extension applications. A graduate who obtains Thai employment must use the appropriate new visa and work-permission process.

Family and dependants: Non-Immigrant O

Prepare the marriage, birth, adoption or other recognised relationship documents required for the chosen family purpose. Add the Thai family member’s identity or the foreign sponsor’s passport, visa or permission-to-stay evidence and any required financial or accommodation evidence. DTV, LTR and SMART dependants have programme-specific routes; do not assume a general Non-O checklist covers them.

Thailand work study and family visas: later steps

Before the first admission expires, identify the competent Immigration office and the sponsor’s extension support. Check work permission, address reporting, accommodation notification and re-entry requirements separately. Do not let a school, employer or agent hold the only record of your permitted-stay date. For unpaid volunteering, medical care or media work, use the specialist guide rather than describing the trip as an ordinary holiday.

Put the documents and route together

Choose the permission for your real purpose, then check your arrival steps and any border crossing separately. Keep enough time for an extension decision or a confirmed departure before your permitted stay expires.
