Thailand LTR, SMART and Privilege visas

Compare BOI-endorsed residence routes and paid Privilege membership.

Thailand long-stay visas include separate programmes with different purposes. LTR is a BOI qualification-based route, SMART currently highlights startup and dependant categories, and Thailand Privilege is a paid membership route. None is a general substitute for checking the activity you will conduct, the conditions you must maintain and the work authorisation that may apply.

LTR: four principal qualification tracks

BOI lists Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work-from-Thailand Professionals and Highly Skilled Professionals, plus eligible dependants. The programme is structured as an initial five-year permission with a further five years if conditions remain met. Applicants first seek BOI qualification endorsement. Insurance, deposits, qualifying employment, assets or investments depend on the chosen track.

LTR financial examples and application cost

Published examples include USD1 million in assets plus USD500,000 qualifying Thai investment for Wealthy Global Citizens; qualifying passive income for Wealthy Pensioners; and income plus employer or professional criteria for the professional tracks. The full BOI combinations and exceptions matter. BOI publishes THB50,000 for ten-year visa issuance in Thailand; overseas collection fees can differ. Use the current official checklist, not a single threshold taken out of context.

SMART: use the current BOI categories

The current BOI homepage presents SMART S for qualifying technology-based startups and SMART O for eligible dependants. Its S summary requires at least THB600,000 held for three months, health insurance, and a qualifying directorship or at least 25% shareholding in an established Thai startup in a targeted industry. Follow the detailed BOI endorsement criteria before applying.

Older SMART T, I and E descriptions

Some embassy pages and older material still describe SMART T, I and E. The current programme homepage does not present these as the same open application options as S and O. Applicants or existing holders should ask BOI directly about current acceptance, transitions and renewal conditions. Do not buy an application service solely on an old five-category comparison chart.

Thailand Privilege: paid membership and approval

Thailand Privilege offers membership packages linked to long-stay benefits. Official material lists Bronze, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Reserve; admission windows, availability, fees and conditions must be confirmed directly, particularly where a limited offer is involved. Membership duration, visa validity and the period admitted on each entry are separate. Check the official contract and visa conditions before paying; membership is not ordinary employment permission.

Compare Thailand long-stay visas before committing

Prepare a side-by-side list of the purpose, total application or membership cost, required funds, insurance, dependants, work permissions and annual compliance. Financial eligibility must continue where required; approval at the beginning is not the end of the obligation. Apply through the official programme or a clearly identified authorised channel, and use the arrival and extension guide to plan later trips.

Put the documents and route together

Choose the permission for your real purpose, then check your arrival steps and any border crossing separately. Keep enough time for an extension decision or a confirmed departure before your permitted stay expires.
