Thailand specialist and official visas

Medical, transit, media, religion, research, official duties and other authority-led categories.

Thailand specialist visas require the purpose and supporting authority to be clear before an application is made. The categories below complement the tourist, work, study, family and long-stay guides. Some are available only for a defined role or approval; an old category name on a form does not prove that a particular mission currently accepts a new application under it.

Transit TS, sport S and transport crew C

Transit visas cover specified onward-transit purposes; S covers qualifying sports participation and C the person in charge or crew of a conveyance. Prepare onward transport and destination-entry evidence, an event organiser’s letter or an employer or carrier’s crew documents as applicable. Do not assume that every airside transit, self-transfer or airport change is visa-free: confirm the itinerary with the airline and Thai mission.

Medical treatment: MT and longer-stay O

Short medical treatment may use MT; longer treatment can fall under a Non-O purpose. Obtain the Thai hospital or medical provider’s appointment or treatment confirmation, estimated duration and any required financial or accompanying-person documents. Eligible DTV medical activity is a separate application route. Check the actual treatment plan and stay length before choosing the category.

Media and film production: M

Journalists and professional media require the relevant registration or approval through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; film-production work involves the Department of Tourism’s approval process. Prepare the organisation’s assignment letter, project details and the relevant authority’s documents. The permission for the activity and the visa application are linked processes, not something a tourist entry automatically supplies.

Religion R or R-A and research RS

Religious activities require the relevant Thai ministry or government concurrence and the host organisation’s supporting letter. Scientific research uses RS with the research institution’s documents and relevant approval, including the National Research Council where required. Discuss the exact project, location and duration with the host before applying; a general course invitation is not a substitute for specialist approval.

Official F, diplomatic D and courtesy visas

Diplomatic and official passport holders travelling on official assignments use the appropriate mission-led route. Non-F may also apply to specified official-duty purposes on an ordinary passport. A courtesy visa is a distinct, purpose-based category. The sending organisation should provide the official request or diplomatic note and supporting assignment details, with the responsible Thai mission confirming the correct route.

Volunteering, legal proceedings and other Non-O purposes

Non-O can cover approved volunteering, longer medical stays, family purposes and other specified cases. Central consular information also describes legal-party or witness circumstances. Prepare the relevant charity, hospital, court or other responsible organisation’s evidence and any governmental approval. Unpaid work should not be assumed exempt from work-permission rules simply because no salary is received.

Migrant-worker routes and permanent residence

L-A and related labour arrangements are specialised, nationality- and agreement-dependent procedures involving employers and the competent labour and immigration authorities. Permanent residence is a separate application system with its own eligibility, annual opening and quota rules; it is not a tourist visa or an ordinary e-Visa category. Confirm current requirements directly with Immigration and the Department of Employment.

Use the current Thailand specialist visas checklist

Select the exact purpose in the official e-Visa system, identify the mission responsible for your location, then obtain its current checklist and fee. Category names, invitation wording and approvals should agree with one another. Fees are generally non-refundable even if approval is not granted. Use the application’s actual request for additional evidence rather than an undated internet checklist.

Put the documents and route together

Choose the permission for your real purpose, then check your arrival steps and any border crossing separately. Keep enough time for an extension decision or a confirmed departure before your permitted stay expires.
