Isaan

Our first Isaan collection connects two very different interests: the archaeology of Ban Chiang and the architectural setting of Phanom Rung. Plan around a specific interest before choosing a base. A region-wide checklist would understate the time spent moving between places.

A focused visit based near one site is a better starting point than promising to see the whole northeast in a short break. Confirm the last leg of transport before committing to accommodation.

Places to begin.

udon thani · culture

Ban Chiang shifts attention from royal monuments to prehistoric everyday life. UNESCO describes evidence of settled agriculture, pottery and metalworking at this habitation and burial site in Udon Thani. It is a rewarding subject for travellers interested in objects and the questions archaeologists ask of them.

buriram · culture

Phanom Rung brings Khmer architecture into a lower-Isaan journey. TAT describes it as a sandstone sanctuary in Buriram, and suggests Nang Rong as a base for an early visit. Consider it an itinerary anchor rather than an incidental stop on a long transfer.
